How do I turn off unused apps (for iOS) to save data?

​​By following these steps, you can ensure only the apps you need use data while traveling. This will help you save your data and extend your battery life.

Close unused apps

  • Swipe up from the bottom of the screen (iPhone X or later) or double-click the "Home" button (iPhone 8 or earlier).

  • Find the apps you want to close by swiping left or right.

  • Swipe up on the app preview to close it.

Turn off background app refresh

  • Go to "Settings" > "General" > "Background App Refresh".

  • You can turn it off completely or choose individual apps. You can also choose the ‘Wi-Fi’ option, so your phone only refreshes apps when on a Wi-Fi connection.

Turn off cellular data for certain apps

  • Go to "Settings" > "Mobile Data or Cellular".

  • Scroll down and toggle off the apps you don't want to use "Mobile Data/Cellular Data".

Stop automatic downloads

  • Go to "Settings" > "App Store".

  • Toggle off "Apps Downloads", "App Updates", and "Automatic Downloads".
